Can’t find special links in your project plan?

You maby know this. You are currently working on an project and you face the need to identify your external predecessors or successors. With a external relationshop in the corresponding column this is pretty easy. But if you are using special links in a big program this can be a nightmare.

Project has a simple solution for that! What we are going to do is to create a view with a filter where special linked tasks are highlighted.

But first, what are special links? With Project Professional 2010 there is a feature available to set up special links. For example the start date of two tasks can be bound together.

You can achieve this by

  • selecting the source field for your link
  • copy
  • select the target field
  • “Paste Special…”
Create a linked filed by using the "Paste Special..." feature
Create a linked filed by using the “Paste Special…” feature
  • select “Paste Link”
Change the option and set up a linked field

But how to identify those linked fields as they do not appear in the link dialogue for external tasks?

  • First there is a smart indicator showing there is sth. Linked
  • Second you can filter on the column “Linked Fields” to identify the lines
A filter can be used or for filtering out or to highlight the corresponding entries

Based on that column you can create a custom filter in order to highlight those tasks or even to create custom views.
Voilá, that’s it. I hope this helps you the way it helped me!
